Wide Awake - Katy Perry

I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake

I'm wide awake
Yeah, I was in the dark
I was falling hard
With an open heart
(I'm wide awake)
How did I read the stars so wrong?

One of the scenes where Katy meets
little Katy, a symbol of her innocence
(I'm wide awake)
And now it's clear to me
That everything you see
Ain't always what it seems
(I'm wide awake)
Yeah, I was dreaming for so long

[Pre-Chorus:]
I wish I knew then
What I know now
Wouldn't dive in
Wouldn't bow down
Gravity hurts
You made it so sweet
'Til I woke up on
On the concrete

[Chorus:]
Falling from cloud nine
Crashing from the high
I'm letting go tonight
Yeah, I'm falling from cloud nine

I'm wide awake
Not losing any sleep
I picked up every piece
And landed on my feet
I'm wide awake
Need nothing to complete myself, no

I'm wide awake
Yeah, I am born again
Out of the lion's den
I don't have to pretend
And it's too late
The story's over now, the end

[Pre-Chorus:]
I wish I knew then
What I know now
Wouldn't dive in
Wouldn't bow down
Gravity hurts
You made it so sweet
'Til I woke up on
On the concrete

[Chorus:]
Falling from cloud nine (it was out of the blue)
I'm crashing from the high
I'm letting go tonight (yeah, I'm letting you go)
I'm falling from cloud nine

(I'm wide awake)
Thunder rumbling
Castles crumbling
(I'm wide awake)
I am trying to hold on
(I'm wide awake)
God knows that I tried
Seeing the bright side
(I'm wide awake)
I'm not blind anymore...

I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake

[Chorus:]
Yeah, I'm falling from cloud nine (it was out of the blue)
Crashing from the high
You know I'm letting go tonight (yeah, I'm letting you go)
I'm falling from cloud nine

I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake

Ok, so lately, I listen to this song of Katy Perry very often. The first thing that make me interested is the MV. Love the gothic outwear and make up, love the many symbolic scenes, love the little Katy, and love the resolution of the story. I know from my cousin that this MV is showing how Katy moving on, waking up from the reality when she is 'finished' with his ex-husband. But for me, this song has more meaning than that.

It's about someone that dreams, not exactly dreaming, but she has her way of life that is like a dream (maybe full of happiness and good things). But she catches the meaning of her life in a wrong way. Maybe, she takes her happiness all into herself, not realizing that someday it could lost like a puff, just like in a dream.

So she falls, crashed, one time in her life. She feels the hardships of falling, but someone makes it look so beautiful so she doesn't realize it. That's why she said 'till I woke up on the concrete'. Waking up on the concrete ... is like when you are very drunk, you fall and sleep, but when you wake up you are on the road or the concrete. You realize that your drunk state is just a dream, and there is a reality coming up.

Image result for we are too focused on what we don't haveThe part of 'I am wide awake' that continues to echoed along the song, is like a spell. Telling herself that she is already awake. She knows that she only had a dream, and she must go back to reality, she needs to move on. She reminds herself of how sweet the dream is, how beautiful her life is, and also how she hurts herself (or maybe someone hurts her), how it is so painful when she falls, but she remembers that she need to wake up.

Sometimes we are too focus on what is going in our life. We let ourselves dwell deeply in our problems. We think as if we are the most unfortunate person in this world. We realize the sweetness, and when that happiness is gone, we fall and can't stand on our feet. We feel meaningless, depressed, and sometimes even blame things ... blame our family, friends, lover, condition, even God ... we blame all. Without we realizing that blaming things just make things worse.

Then He proportioned him and breathed into him from His [created] soul and made for you hearing and vision and hearts; little are you grateful. (The Holy Quran As Sajdah : 9)

We make ourselves as the main character in a story entitled 'Life'. We put the center of the story in ourselves. We focus in ourselves. And when bad things happened we will say 'This shouldn't be happened. There must be a mistake.' We live egoistically. We dwell in our own ego so much that we forget to see our surrounding. We forget what we have. We focused on what we don't have. And living like that is just painful and PATHETIC.

We should really WIDE AWAKE. Awake to see that there is nothing wrong with having some problems, doing some mistakes, questioning things, those are all just normal. We should really awake to see that this life is just that lively with all of the imperfect things. That life is just perfect with its imperfection, and those imperfections are something that we need to be grateful for.
